German farmer violent in row over cows held in dark

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German farmer attacked police with an axe after they came to his farm to enforce a law requiring that cows to have windows and access to daylight in their stall.
Police in Wuerzburg, south of Frankfurt, said officers were sent to collect 17 cows held in a windowless hut which deprived them of their right to daylight -- as required under strict German animal protection laws.
The 47-year-old farmer refused to turn his animals over to authorities and armed himself with an axe and iron rod. He also threw bricks at police at his farm in the village of Ebern.
After an officer got injured trying to snatch away his axe, the farmer hit two policemen with the rod and tried to flee. An officer then pulled out his gun and shot him in a leg after the farmer ignored his warning shots.
